NAFAS - Cyber-secure Brain-Machine Interaction

About the customer and the project

Zander Labs is a cutting-edge German-Dutch deep tech company that is leading the way in passive brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and neuroadaptive technology. They have partnered with the Agency for Innovation in Cyber Security GmbH (Cyberagentur) for the "Neuroadaptivity for Autonomous Systems" (NAFAS) project, which aims to create machines that can read and interpret human brain activity.

KiviCore has been brought on board to collaborate with Zander Labs on this groundbreaking initiative, working to develop a super-compact, mobile Brain Communication Interface (BCI) that is not only innovative but also secure. This project is all about bridging the gap between the human brain and machines, opening up new possibilities in medicine, neurotechnology, and beyond.

What our core tasks are

KiviCore is responsible for designing and building a secure BCI module that integrates both hardware and software. The goal is to ensure that wireless data transmission is fast, secure, and aligns with the fundamental principles of communication security: authenticity, data integrity, and confidentiality.

  • We ensure seamless, low-latency communication between BCI hardware, amplifier, and host application.
  • Our work covers the full communication stack, developing both hardware and software for secure and efficient data exchange.
  • We integrate encryption and other security mechanisms to protect sensitive data at every stage of the signal and data path.

For us, the NAFAS project is more than just a technical challenge, it is an opportunity to push the boundaries of technology in ways that will not only improve the lives of people with neurological conditions but also revolutionize the way we interact with machines. And we are doing it with solid cybersecurity in place.

SECUSAT - Secure Space Communication

The project develops a quantum-resistant end-to-end security solution for SATCOM links (ground–space, inter-satellite, ground–ground via relay) based on an IPsec/PQC platform derived from existing GomSpace hardware and software. In parallel, it analyzes the constraints of using PQC in IPsec over CCSDS and derives recommendations for ESA.

KiviCore Tasks

    • Design of crypto architecture (classical + PQC) for IPsec/IKEv2.
    • Development of cryptographic core functions for IPsec/IKEv2 modules (key exchange, SA/SP handling, traffic encryption).
    • Implementation of traffic encryption module as an FPGA IP core.
    • Integrate IPsec/IKEv2 IP Core and software API into NanoCom communication modules from GomSpace.
    • Contribution to performance and security analyses as well as technical documentation.
